BIOGRAPHY SHORT VERSION (英文簡歷) 

Canadian Chinese violinist, Mercedes Cheung (Zhang梅賽得斯), speaks fluent French, English, Spanish and Mandarin. Mercedes has already performed in some of the greatest international scenes, including her Carnegie Hall debut recital in 2012 where she featured the complete Paganini's 24 Caprices by heart at age 10. She is the youngest ever to have recorded Paganini's 24 Caprices on DVD and CD, all in one take, released in May 2012.  Mercedes gave her public solo debut recital at six years old, performing a two-hour long artistic and virtuosic program by heart at Flato Markham Theatre, Canada. In her orchestral debut at age 10, she performed Vivaldi's "Winter" Concerto from The Four Seasons with the Markham String Chamber Orchestra at Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts.  A month later, she performed as soloist in Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen with the Markham Symphony Orchestra at Flato Markham Theatre. At age 12, Mercedes was one of 12 gifted violinists around the world (up to age 27), selected to participate in the 2014 Crans-Montana Classics Master Classes in Switzerland with a full scholarship.  She was chosen by Shlomo Mintz to solo with him and gave a dazzling performance of Vivaldi's Concerto for Four Violins with the National Chamber Ensemble "Kiev Soloists" at the closing concert in "Centre de Congres Le Regent".  Mercedes won the Metrowest Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Soloist Competition and performed with the Orchestra in its 2015-16 Season in Boston. On October 30, 2014, Toronto TV broadcasted Mercedes' Solo Violin Recital at Flato Markham Theatre for Performing Arts in the Diamond Series Artists Concerts and she will return to perform again in the 2019-20 season.  Mercedes was the Silver Medalist in the 2014 "Teen's Talent Show" - American Youth Talent and  Arts Competition in New York.  She has been awarded full scholarships from three major institutes namely the Juilliard School, the New England Conservatory of Music and the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists of the Toronto Royal Conservatory of Music. Mercedes has been interviewed and documented by international and national televisions and radio stations, and almost all television stations and newspapers in Canada. Television stations include Sinovision (New York), “Canada AM” National TV, City TV, Rogers, Fairchild, Omni, Talentvision and CTV.  She was invited to be a guest performer and was interviewed on air by TVOKids for their special "Music" Day which aired on Christmas and New Year's Day 2013. Radio stations include Toronto Newstalk 1010 and Buffalo WNED Classical FM 94.5.  Online and local newspapers include Sing Tao Daily, Ming Pao, World Journal, Markham Economist and Sun, and Markham Review, and Whole Note & "Toronto Life" Magazines. Mercedes was also featured in full pages of "Le Nouvelliste" and "Sixieme Dimension" newspapers of Crans-Montana, Switzerland. Mercedes was the Winner of the prestigious 2010 Achievement and Civic Recognition Award (ACRA) in the Cultural Category (Markham, Canada) along with two other category winners: Seneca College President, David Agnew (Technology Award) & Co-Founders of "Free the Children", Craig & Marc Kielburger (Community Award). In 2019, Mercedes has been accepted by Juilliard School with Columbia University Cross Program, New England Conservatory of Music and Cleveland Institute of Music with full scholarship. She will be studying at CIM with professor Ilya Kaler (3 International Violin Competition Gold Medalist: Tchaikovsky, Paganini & Sibelius). Mercedes currently studies at Juilliard School Pre-College with Donald Weilerstein, Li Lin, and her father, Ephraim Cheung. She also has studied with Kim Kashkashian.  Mercedes has performed in master classes and has taken lessons with Shlomo Mintz, Zakhar Bron, David Cerone and Sungsic Yang.  Additionally, she took lessons with Ilya Kaler, Robert Lipsett, Joel Smirnoff, and Paul Kantor and master class with Soovin Kim.  She was invited twice in 2011 and 2013 to perform as guest artist at the Banff Centre Summer Music Artists Concerts by Barry Shiffman, Artistic Director. Mercedes substituted as Concertmaster for Ontario Philharmonic Orchestra's Christmas Concerts on December 22 and 23, 2018 in Oshawa, Canada. Upon the successful concerts, she was appointed as Concertmaster / Co-Concertmaster by the Music Director, who also invited her to solo Bach's Double Concerto for Two Violins in the March 2019 concert. Mercedes' upcoming solo recitals include: January 12, 2019, at Paul Hall in Lincoln Center, New York, and Young Artists Concert Series at St. Gregory's Woodstock, New York, has scheduled on April 28th 2019. Mercedes' interview by Fairchild TV (新時代電視) on the well-known TV show - "Dacheng Xiaoju" (大城小聚) has been postponed to June 2nd, 2019. She will solo Beethoven Violin Concerto in D Major, with Toronto Concert Orchestra, to celebrate Beethoven's 250th Anniversary, presented by Flato Markham Theatre's Diamond Artists Subscription Concert Series in 2019 - 2020 Season; a four-city concert tour as a soloist in Canada is planning during the season as well. Mercedes performs on a 1623 Giovanni Paolo Maggini violin.

Born in Toronto, Ontario, young Canadian violinist, Mercedes Cheung (Zhang), speaks  fluent French, English, Spanish and Mandarin. She has been hailed as being "A True Music Prodigy" by many world-leading musicians and media alike: "Very talented" - Itzhak Perlman (Faculty of Juilliard School; world-renowned concert violinist), "Extremely gifted… A wonderful talent” - Donald Weilerstein (Faculty of Juilliard School and New England Conservatory, Dorothy Richard Starling Chair), "Wonderful memory and very gifted" - Joel Smirnoff (former President of Cleveland Institute of Music, former String Department Head of Juilliard School and First Violinist of Juilliard Quartet), "Very, very gifted...A wonderful talent" - David Cerone (former President of Cleveland Institute of Music and Violin Department Chairman at Curtis Institute, succeeding the late Ivan Galamian). Mercedes possesses a virtuosic technique and profound musicality that surpasses her tender age.

In 2010, at age 8, Mercedes was admitted as the youngest full scholarship winner to the Juilliard School Pre-College Division - Young Talented Program. She auditioned with the following repertoire: Paganini: 24 Caprices, No. 24, Vieuxtemps: Violin Concerto, No. 5 (Complete), and Bach: Solo Sonatas and Partitas, Sonata, No. 1 (Complete) for 8 jurors, among them include Itzhak Perlman, Sally Thomas and Stephen Clapp. She has served as the Associate Concertmaster with the Juilliard School Pre-College Symphony Orchestra during the 2014 -2015 concert season.

At age 9, Mercedes was awarded full scholarships from New England Conservatory of Music in Boston as well as Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto to study chamber music with Barry Shiffman and violin with Paul Kantor (Faculty at the Glenn Gould School). She has studied with Kim Kashkashian (Faculty of New England Conservatory of Music, Grammy-award winning violist), and performed in master classes and has taken lessons with Shlomo Mintz, Zakhar Bron (teacher of Maxim Vengerov and Vadim Repin), David Cerone and Sungsic Yang. Additionally, she took lessons with Ilya Kaler, Robert Lipsett, Joel Smirnoff, and Paul Kantor and master class with Soovin Kim.

In 2019, Mercedes has been accepted by Juilliard School with Columbia University Cross Program, New England Conservatory of Music and Cleveland Institute of Music with full scholarship. She will be studying at CIM with professor Ilya Kaler (3 International Violin Competition Gold Medalist: Tchaikovsky, Paganini & Sibelius).   
         

At age 10, Mercedes is the world's youngest violinist ever to have performed the most virtuosic and challenging repertoire of the complete set of Paganini's 24 Caprices by heart in her Carnegie Hall debut recital on December 28, 2012. Furthermore, she is also the youngest violinist ever (at age 10), to have recorded in one take the complete 24 Caprices on DVD & CD which were released on May 28, 2012. On January 12, 2013, Mercedes performed a solo recital in Paul Hall at the Lincoln Center in New York. She was also invited twice on July 8, 2011 and July 13, 2013 by world-famous violinist, Barry Shiffman, to perform as guest solo artist at the Banff Centre Summer Music Artists Concerts in Rolston Recital Hall.  Mercedes is the youngest one in the history of the Royal Conservatory of Music to obtain First Class Honours in her Grade 10 violin exam (at age 7) and ARCT Violin Performer Diploma exam (at age 9). Her intense discipline and passionate dedication in her violin studies has brought her to an amazing artistic excellence within a short period of time. Mercedes has also equally distinguished herself in her spectacular piano playing, winning numerous prizes and honours in music festivals.

On October 30, 2014, Toronto TV broadcasted Mercedes' Solo Violin Recital at Flato Markham Theatre for Performing Arts in the Diamond Series Artists Concerts that include distinguished artists.  Mercedes was invited to perform Sibelius' Violin Concerto with the Metrowest Symphony Orchestra as soloist winner in the Young Artists program during the 2015-16 concert season.  She also won the Silver Medal in the "2014 Teen's Talent Show" - American Youth Talent and  Arts Competition in New York. At the age of two years and seven months, Mercedes started to play the violin and two years later, she requested her father, Ephraim Cheung, to give her formal lessons. On December 21, 2008, Mercedes presented her public solo debut recital at six years old at Flato Markham Theatre, performing a two-hour long artistic and virtuosic program by heart.  The repertoire comprised eight selections of music: Mozart: Violin Concerto No. 3 (Complete), Beethoven: Romance No. 2, Hubay: Hejre Kati, Beethoven: Spring Sonata (1st Mvt.), Chopin: Nocturne in C# Minor, Elgar: Salut d'amour, Sarasate: Zigeunerweisen, Encore-Bach: Solo Partita No. 2, Allemande, and a Christmas selection). Her excellent memory, superb technique & musical maturity shocked the media & audience, and hence, with their expressions of love and respect, Mercedes received a full house standing ovation. After this exceptionally successful performance, Mercedes has been invited to perform in many concerts and events.

Mercedes has been regularly interviewed by various media including Newstalk 1010 (John Moore), WNED Classical FM 94.5, Buffalo (Peter Hall), Canada AM National Television (Beverly Thomson), City TV, Rogers, Fairchild, Omni, Talentvision, CTV, and Sinovision TV (New York) which aired the interviews on local and national news broadcasts, including an hour-long interview and documentary on Fairchild TV. MERCEDES' MOST HIGHLIGHTED PERFORMANCES

On December 30, 2008 (her 7th birthday), Mercedes performed at the Gala Banquet of the World Journal Newspapers. On April 3, 2009, she received a three-day notice to appear as one of the youngest artists as violin soloist in “Love Across the Pacific”, a benefit concert for China’s Szechuan earthquake in P.C. Ho Theatre at the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto along with eight pop and classical superstar singers from China. Mercedes has not only appeared in performances in the concert hall, but has also performed at government special events such as the "Tribute Performance" (violin solo on June 23, 2009) to Councillor Tony Wong & Senior’s Hall of Fame Awards at Markham Civic Centre. Mercedes' performances followed incessantly month after month. On July 1, 2009, she performed as a violin soloist at "Canada Day Celebrations" - Mayor & Councillors' luncheon at Le Parc Dining & Banquet Halls. Thereafter, on August 30, 2009, she performed at the Markham Community Outdoor Concert hosted by Member of Provincial Parliament for Oak Ridges & Markham. On September 19, 2009, Mercedes was featured as the youngest artist to perform as soloist at the Meadowvale Theatre in celebration of the Moon Festival and Commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of the Mississauga Mandarin Association.  Then on October 31, 2009, Mercedes performed at the Halloween Banquet hosted by Markham Rotary Club and thereafter on November 19, 2009, she was featured as the youngest violinist at the Opening Gala of "Spotlight 2009-Youth Talent in York Region" (with Canadian Idol Judge, Farley Flex, as Master of Ceremonies), hosted by The Children's Aid Foundation. That evening, Mercedes was the only performer to be interviewed by Rogers TV and also received an Award of Recognition for "Outstanding Musical Ability and Contribution" from the Markham Mayor & Members of Council. Three days later on November 22, 2009, Mercedes was invited to perform at the Opening Ceremonies Gala in Recognition of International, National, Provincial & Regional Championships Winners, hosted by the Markham Sport Council. Mercedes was the only one who received a full house standing ovation and awarded a scholarship.  Mercedes was invited by Canadian Idol judge, Farley Flex, to perform as violin soloist at the Durham International Festival from July 16 to 18, 2010, and was also invited to perform as soloist at the Canada-China 40th Anniversary Diplomatic Relations Concert on August 8. With all these extremely successful performances, Mercedes has proven herself to be one of the most gifted, versatile and virtuosic prodigy violinists of today.

二零零八年十二月三十號,梅得斯應世界日報的邀請,在他們的周年大慶典會上担任小提獨奏,二零零九年,七她己應新時代電視的邀請在 大城小聚 錄影了實塲演奏和訪問長達一小時的整個節目; 同年四月三號梅得斯應邀請在四川地震慰演跨越太平洋的愛與中國八名演藝巨星( 郭峰、徐誉滕、阿法、王立森、黑子組合和林振宇總導演)同塲演小提琴,當時是全塲最小的獨奏者。接着同年的六月二十三號,梅得斯應萬市市長的邀請,在萬CivicCentre爲名人頒慶典會上担任小提獨奏,一個月後又被萬市市長和議員們的邀請,在加拿大日(Canada Day) 慶典會上担任小提獨奏,接此梅得斯時常被邀請在政府慶典會上担任小提獨奏表演,

在二零零九年的九日三日, 梅賽得斯再次到訪美國,她到加州的迪士尼樂園(Disneyland)玩,并順道來到了世界著名的"海費茲教課廳 <<Heifez Studio>>,  演奏給當今偉大的小提琴教學大師,Robert Lispett 聽 (Lipsett 是 Leila Josefowicz 的小提琴教授,Leila 是當今可以跟 Sarah Chang 和 Midori 比美的國際巨星女小提琴家,當Lipsett聽完梅賽得斯演奏之後對其父亲說 "我對您的女兒非常感興趣,她什麽畤候可以再回來美國呢?并推薦梅賽得斯拉魏歐當(vieuxtemps))的小提琴第五號協奏曲 (這曲是Mr. Lipsett教Leila十二歳時跟美國洛杉愛樂管弦樂獨奏的曲目),Mr. Lipsett希望一年後, 梅賽得斯能再回來美國, 並演奏這協奏曲給他聽(到時梅賽得斯會是八!)。

二零零九年,九月十九號,梅賽得斯被省國議的邀請, 在外音樂會上担任小提獨奏,接着梅賽得斯又被邀請, 到Mississauga市, 爲國語協會十周年慶典音樂會, 和月餅節担任小提獨奏, 當晚她也是全塲最小的演奏者。梅賽得斯得奬和表演無數,令人難忘的是在二零零九年的十一月十九日, 梅得斯爲加拿(York Region)天才青少年音樂會, 担任開幕首演小提琴獨奏,在當晚所有多位表演者當中,她是最注目的一個,不單梅得斯是唯一接受ROGERS電視台訪問, 及現塲演奏錄影, 她還是當晚唯一接受市長頒發給 <<傑優秀音樂才氣和貢獻奨状>>的表演者。同個星期的十一日二十四日,萬市體育委員會, 在奧運、國際、國家、省、市的體育得獎者頒奬會上, 梅賽得斯再次担任開幕首演小提琴獨奏,她再次以精采的琴技和演藝, 令到當晚全塲滿坐的觀眾爲她而起立鼓掌, 更令人感動是當世界柔道冠軍 Kimberly Orr (Gold Medalist,Commonwealth –International Judo Championship)聽完了梅賽得斯演奏, 感動得把萬錦市市長頒發給她的奬牌, 掛在梅得斯身上,以示她對梅得斯的欽佩和讚賞。二零一零年七月十六至十八號,Canadian Idol的評委, 特意邀請梅賽得斯, 在Durham的國際藝術音樂節, 担任小提琴獨奏。

2018年, 十二月, 梅賽德斯, 應安大略省愛樂樂團(Ontario Philharmonic)邀請. 於周六, 周日(22及23日)假奧沙華麗晶劇院(Regent Theatre)舉行的聖誕音樂會, 擔任樂團客席團長(Orchestra Guest Concertmaster),與樂團演奏聖誕音樂會。 音樂會結束後,音樂總監Maestro Marco Parisotto立即任命她為樂團首席團長(Orchestra Concertmaster), 並邀請她在2019年3月的音樂會上獨奏巴赫雙協奏曲。梅賽德斯即將舉行的音樂會,包括2019年1月12日在美國林肯中心Paul Hall舉辦的獨奏音樂會,以及在紐約的,聖格雷戈里伍德斯托克的青年藝術家小提琴獨奏音樂會,計劃於2019428日舉行。梅賽德斯被新時代電視( Fairchild TV)採訪,在著名電視節:大城小聚”, 已被推遲到201962日。她將與多倫多音樂管弦樂團(Toronto Concert Orchestra)合作, 獨奏貝多芬的D大調, 小提琴協奏曲,慶祝貝多芬誕辰250週年,由Flato Markham 劇院鑽石藝術家系列獨奏音樂會, 於2019年至2020年季節呈現梅賽德斯作為獨奏家, 將在加拿大的四城市巡迴獨奏音樂會。梅賽德斯演奏的小提琴是, 1623 Giovanni Paolo Maggini

得斯從小就酷愛音樂,在两半時,父親張怡飛,(Ephraim Cheung小提琴家和教授,并担任萬市交嚮樂音樂總監和指揮) 已開始教她拉一些簡單的兒歌。到她四十個月的有一天,梅得斯突然要求父親給她正式上課, 自從那天開始她就接受了嚴格訓練。 梅得斯也跟隨其母親 (皇家音樂院考官和鋼琴演奏與教學博士) 戴美玲(Nancy Tye)學鋼琴,現在她的鋼琴水准,可以与她的小提琴媲美。但由于她的学, 和小提琴的繁忙演奏生涯,她要暂时放下她的琴学。梅得斯的理想和志願是希望將來能成爲一位世界上最好的獨奏家。 她平時的愛好有很多,喜歡看書,繪画,聽音樂,看電視,玩迪士尼玩具,騎單車和到公園玩耍。
